These fruity oatmeal cookies were a special request from my youngest boy. Well, he did not specifically request for the fruits and the oatmeal, but he did ask for chocolate cookies. So I made him chocolate cookies with added fruits and oats because I knew he would be eating a lot of them and I thought might as well I make them ‘healthier’ with the oats and the fruits.
The cookies were pretty easy and fast to make. After all, these are basic hand-shaped cookies. And there is hardly any deco on them except for the chocolate on top. So basically, I was able to mix the dough and bake the cookies all in less than one hour.
These cookies have a crumbly texture and are neither crunchy nor chewy. Yet, they are soft and every bite of the cookies comes with a taste of the luxurious dark chocolate topping and rich fruits mix.
Tips for Making the Best Fruity Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies
Here are a couple of noteworthy points about these cookies:
- The amount of sugar in the recipe is relatively little and even that, I only used brown sugar. This is complemented perfectly with the sweetness from the raisins, candied cherries and orange peel added to the dough. Coupled with the oatmeal and the desiccated coconut, these cookies make a healthy choice for the health-conscious.
- The use of self-raising flour means the cookies will rise during baking. Therefore, the cookies must be placed slightly apart on the baking tray.
- The fruit mix I used in this recipe was a combination of chopped raisins, sultanas, candied cherries and candied orange peel. These can be substituted with any other dried or candied fruits of your choice.
Shaping the cookies
- The cookie dough will be rather sticky if you try to shape the cookies immediately after mixing in all ingredients. Resting the dough for about 30 minutes helps to firm it up. It will not stick to the fingers when shaping into balls. Resting the dough allows the oatmeal and the dried desiccated coconut to absorb much of the moisture in the dough. This makes it so much more manageable for hand-shaped balls.
- Each cookie I made was scooped with a 1 tbsp measuring spoon. That way, I could make sure the sizes of the cookies were consistent. With this measure, the recipe below yielded a total of 50 cookies.
Chocolate in the cookies
- Instead of spreading melted chocolate onto the cookies after baking, I chose to add the chocolate before baking. This was easily done by pressing dark chocolate buttons onto the center of each cookie before baking.
- When pressing the chocolate buttons, I made sure they were pressed deep enough that the centers were slighted welled in. This was to avoid the chocolate from overflowing from the cookies during baking.
Storing the cookies
- The cookies are best eaten when freshly baked. They can, however, last well for one week in an airtight container.

Fruity Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies
- 150 g butter salted
- 50 g soft brown sugar
- 100 g self raising flour
- 10 g cocoa powder
- 100 g instant oats
- 10 g desiccated coconut dry
- 50 g mixed fruits
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla essence
- Chocolate buttons about ¾ inches in diameter
- Preheat oven to 150 degrees Celsius. Line baking trays with baking paper.
- Sift flour and cocoa powder and leave aside.
- In a separate container, mix the desiccated coconut, oatmeal and chopped mixed fruits.
- Next, in a clean bowl, cream butter and sugar until creamy. Add the egg and vanilla essence and continue beating until the mixture is creamy and well incorporated. Add in the sifted flour and cocoa powder mixture, a little at a time.
- Add the coconut-oatmeal-fruits mixture and mix until the ingredients are all well incorporated. At this stage, the dough will be slightly sticky.
- Let the dough rest for about 30 minutes and then form small balls by hand. Place the hand rolled cookies on lined cookie trays. Make sure the cookies are placed apart as they will rise in size during baking.
- Press a chocolate button in the center of each cookie ball.
- Bake the cookies for about 12 minutes at 150 degrees Celsius until they are done.
- To cool the cookies, lift the baking paper off the baking tray and place it on a wire rack. Let the cookies cool slightly before removing them from the paper and continue to cool them on a wire rack. This recipe makes about 50 cookies. Keep leftover cookies in airtight container.
